Body

Overview

Google is phasing out support for ChromeOS apps for all operating systems by January 2025. Zoom has released the Zoom Chrome PWA (Progressive Web App), which is intended to replace the ChromeOS Zoom app.

Zoom advises to switch to the new Zoom PWA app sooner rather than later.

Here's How

Install Zoom Chrome PWA App

Download and install the Zoom Chrome PWA app from the Google Play Store. Once installed, it will appear on the user's ChromeOS device.

Join a Meeting and Sign In

Once the Zoom Chrome PWA app has been installed on the ChromeOS device, users can either Join a Meeting or Sign In to schedule or start a meeting.
This is an image of the Zoom Sign In page. It contains a red rectangle around the Join a Meeting button highlighting the need to click on the button.

Zoom functionality on a Chromebook

The Zoom Chrome PWA app offers much of the same great Zoom functionality as you would experience on a Windows or Mac desktop, and has even more features than the previous Zoom app for Chromebook:

  • Customizable Gallery View (on supported machines)

  • Self-select Breakout Rooms

  • Live transcription

  • Live translation (with assigned interpreters)

  • A new background masking feature for privacy

  • Raised hand and meeting reactions

Faculty hosting a Zoom class from a Chromebook can:

  • Access the Security icon in the meeting controls to lock the meeting, enable the Waiting Room, and remove participants

  • Share their entire screen or just a single application window

  • Create and assign Breakout Rooms

  • Share audio with your screen shares

  • Use a whiteboard when sharing your screen

Students using Zoom on Chromebooks can:

  • View a professor's shared screen and share their own if enabled

  • Use nonverbal feedback like Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down

  • Raise their hand to ask a question

  • Chat with the teacher

  • Join Breakout Rooms created by the teacher

Additional tips

The new Zoom Chrome PWA app requires the most recent Chrome browser and ChromeOS update to offer the full range of performance and feature upgrades. We strongly encourage users to update their ChromeOS for the best possible experience.
