Learn Your Own Way with Ally
Ally can convert select course files into alternative formats that are easier for all students to access and use. Because Ally works directly within your D2L course, these formats are available exactly where you need them.
Ally is an accessibility tool that creates a more engaging and user-friendly learning experience. It allows you to choose alternative formats such as electronic Braille, tagged PDFs, audio (MP3), and more that best support your learning preferences and accessibility needs, all from within your D2L course site.
Understanding Alternative Formats in Ally
What Are Alternative Formats?
Ally allows you to access certain course materials in formats that best suit your needs. For example, if you have a long commute and several lecture materials to review, you can download an audio (MP3) version of the content and listen while traveling. If you prefer reading on a tablet or mobile device, you can download an ePub version instead.
What Alternative Formats Are Available?
- OCR'd PDF
- Unlike image-only PDFs, OCR'd PDFs contain searchable text, making them easier to navigate and use. They also work with text-to-speech and screen reader applications.
- Tagged PDF
- Tagged (or structured) PDFs build on OCR'd PDFs by including markup for headings, tables, links, and other document elements. These features improve accessibility for assistive technologies and allow content to reflow for better readability.
- HTML
- Designed for viewing in a web browser or on a mobile device.
- ePub
- Designed for reading as an e-book on tablets, e-readers, and other mobile devices.
- If you would like to try a different ePub reader than the one included on your device, consider Thorium Reader (opens in new tab). Although not supported by OCC, it is a widely used ePub reader application.
- Electronic Braille
- BRF format for use with electronic braille displays.
- Audio
- MP3 format for listening to course content.
- BeeLine Reader
- An enhanced reading format designed to make on-screen reading easier and faster.
- Immersive Reader
- A read-aloud experience that can support reading comprehension and understanding.
