Overview
You may keep current with your Discussions by subscribing to the forums, topics or threads in your course. Once subscribed, you will receive notifications when updates occur.
You may also unsubscribe to a forum, topic or thread to stop receiving notifications.
Here's How
Subscribing to a Discussion Forum or Topic
- On the Discussions List page, locate the forum or topic (e.g. Introduce Yourself) to which you would like to subscribe.
- Cick the forum or topic's Actions dropdown arrow, then select Subscribe.
- Select your preferred Notification Method:
- Show notifications in minibar only: Notifications will appear in the D2L minibar located along the very top of the D2L page.
- Send me an instant notification: You will receive an email notification every time a new message is posted to the selected forum or topic.
- Include in my summary of activity: All new message notifications will be emailed to you once daily in a summary.
- Click the Subscribe button.
Note: Notifications are sent to the email address listed for you in D2L. You may also have messages to your mobile phone by SMS text on the Notifications page.
Important Note
D2L will be sunsetting the SMS Notifications barring any delays in July 2024.
D2L originally built this using a technology service available from most providers, email to SMS. Now, this service is being deprecated by providers and we are experiencing not only inconsistent delivery times but also large-scale outages at some of the largest mobile providers in North America.

Subscribing to a Discussion Message Thread
- On the Discussions List page, click on the name of the discussion topic (e.g. Introduce Yourself) that has the individual message thread(s) you would like to subscribe to.
- Click the Subscribe link located under the message thread you would like to subscribe to.
- Select your preferred Notification Method:
- Show notifications in minibar only: Notifications will appear in the D2L minibar located along the very top of the D2L page.
- Send me an instant notification: You will receive an email notification every time a new message is posted to the selected forum or topic.
- Include in my summary of activity: All new message notifications will be emailed to you once daily in a summary.
- Click the Subscribe button.

Unsubscribing from a Discussion Forum, Topic, or Message Thread
Repeat the same steps above used to subscribe. This time, click the Subscribed link listed under the name of the forum, topic, or thread. A confirmation box asks you to confirm that you want to unsubscribe. Click the Yes button to confirm you would like to no longer receive notifications for the forum, topic or thread.
