D2L Quick Start Guide for Students

Overview

This quick guide covers some basic information to help you get started in D2L. You may find additional help documents under the Academic Tools & Resources category in this Knowledge Base (KB).

Logging In

Option 1

  1. To log into D2L, go to the OCC Homepage Oakland Community College's website and select D2L found under the Quick Links dropdown menu.
  2. Use your MyOCC username and password to log into D2L.

Option 2

  1. Alternatively, you can go directly to the D2L site at https://oaklandcc.desire2learn.com/.
  2. Use your MyOCC username and password to log into D2L

When you log into D2L, you will land on the My Home page which contains links to your D2L course sites as well as help and personal settings options including your Profile and Notifications.

Setting Up Notifications

It is recommended that you set up notifications to alert you by email or text message when there is new activity in your courses.

  1. Once you have successfully logged into D2L find the Profile widget located on the top right of the My Home page.
  2. Select Notifications.
  3. Select the checkboxes corresponding to the notifications you would like to receive.
  4. Save.

Accessing Your Courses

Your D2L courses are listed in Minibar at the top of the page under the Select a course... dropdown menu.

  1. Click on the Select a course… dropdown menu for the list of the courses currently available to you.
  2. To enter a course, simply click on the course name.

Navigating a D2L Course Site

  • The navigation bar (Navbar) and Minibar include links to course tools.
  • Your course materials and lessons can be found under Content.
  • The News widget displays announcements and other news items that your instructor has posted.
  • The Updates widget alerts you of recent course activity.
  • The Calendar widget reflects upcoming course events and tasks. Not all instructors post to the calendar though.

If you have any questions or are having difficulties with the course material, contact your instructor.

Technical Support

D2L Student Helpdesk

If you are having difficulties using any of the course tools, please contact the D2L Student Helpdesk at 855-772-1235. Have your Student ID number ready for the agents to be able to verify your identify.

Password Resets

Password resets cannot be performed by the D2L Helpdesk. Contact Enrollment Services for a password reset at 248-341-2280.

System Maintenance

On the 2nd Sunday of each month, D2L will perform scheduled system maintenance. During the maintenance window of 1 am and 7 am, the system will not be available. Please plan accordingly.
