Overview
Google is phasing out support for Chrome apps (opens in new tab) across all operating systems by January 2025.
To prepare for this change, Zoom has released the Zoom Chrome PWA ( learn more about the Progressive Web App (opens in new tab), which replaces the previous Zoom Chrome app.
Important: Zoom recommends switching to the new Zoom PWA as soon as possible.
Get Started
Install the Zoom Chrome PWA App
Download and install the Zoom Chrome PWA app from the Google Play Store (opens in new tab). Once installed, the app will appear on your Chromebook.

After installing the Zoom Chrome PWA app, you can:

Zoom Functionality on a Chromebook
The Zoom Chrome PWA app provides many of the same features available on Windows and Mac, along with enhancements over the previous Chromebook app:
- Customizable Gallery View (on supported devices)
- Self-select Breakout Rooms
- Live transcription
- Live translation (with assigned interpreters)
- Background masking for added privacy
- Raise hand and meeting reactions
For Faculty
Faculty hosting a Zoom class from a Chromebook can:
- Use the Security menu to lock meetings, enable the Waiting Room, and remove participants
- Share the entire screen or a specific application window
- Create and assign Breakout Rooms
- Share audio while screen sharing
- Use the Zoom Whiteboard (opens in new tab)
For Students
Students using Zoom on Chromebooks can:
- View shared screens and share their own (if enabled)
- Use nonverbal feedback such as thumbs up or thumbs down
- Raise their hand to ask questions
- Chat with the instructor
- Join Breakout Rooms
Additional Tips
For the best experience, make sure your Chromebook is running the latest version of ChromeOS and the Chrome browser. Updates provide improved performance and access to the newest features.
