Accessing a Discussion

Your instructor may include Discussions for you to participate in for your course. There are multiple ways to access Discussions in D2L. Discussions may be accessed from the navigation bar in your course or you may find that your instructor has included a link to a Discussion within the Content Modules. This enables you to access a Discussion from the Content area.

Common Reasons for Not Being Able to Post

You may or may not be able to view or post to a discussion topic for some common reasons:

•Your instructor requires that you first start a new thread in the topic before you can read and reply to other threads by your classmates.
•The dates set for the discussion availability will limit you to when you can view the discussion and post.
•Your instructor locked a discussion forum or topic to prevent new posts from being created, thus making the conversation "read only."

Discussion Views

Discussion threads can be viewed in either the Reading View or Grid View. Reading View shows the full text post, which can cause a lot more scrolling for users. The Grid View will just list all the posts with the title of the thread, instead of the full post.

Posting and Replying to a Discussion

You can participate in discussion in one of two ways: by posting a new thread to a discussion topic or by replying to a thread that a student or your instructor has posted. To keep track of new activity, you can also subscribe to a discussion and receive updates by email or text message immediately or as a daily email summary.

Student Discussion Settings

The Settings in Discussions allow you to modify the display to accommodate your individual preferences. The Settings are located on the Discussions List page.

Subscribing to Discussions

You may keep current with your Discussions by subscribing to the forums, topics or threads in your course. Once subscribed, you will receive notifications when updates occur. You may also unsubscribe to a forum, topic or thread to stop receiving notifications.
